摘要
The use of neutron reflectivity to study the conformational change of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) chains grafted at high surface density in water was investigated. It was observed that PNIPAM exhibits a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of about 30° C in water that is attributed to alterations in the hydrogen bonding interactions of the amide group. As the temperature passed through the LCST, a strong contraction was observed. The results support the basis of a concentration dependent parameter for PNIPAM in water although polydispersity was not ruled out as a contributing factor.
