摘要
Today one third of the carbon dioxide given off by the burning of fossil fuels enters the ocean, reducing its naturally alkaline pH. This shift toward more acidic conditions diminishes the ability of corals and many other marine organisms to build hard parts out of calcium carbonate and to grow.
