The source of the high C2H6/CH4 ratio in Comet Hyakutake

It is demonstrated experimentally that the CO/H2O, CH4/H2O, and C2H6/H2O ratios found by Mumma et al. (1996) in Comet Hyakutake could be obtained by the trapping of these gases in water ice which was formed at 64-66 K. The formation of the ice particles which formed comets, either in the warm outskirts of the interstellar cloud or in the outer part of the solar nebula, is discussed. C3H8 is predicted to exist in comets as well. (C) 1997 Academic Press.
