摘要
In January, 2001, physicists discovered that magnesium diboride, an innocuous compound, is a record-breaking intermetallic superconductor. It was found that the compound has the superconductivity just below 40 K. Superconducting materials are ideally suited to generating the high magnetic fields commonly required in research labs and in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines that are becoming so common in hospitals. Intermetallic suoerconductors operate in a bath of liquid helium while cables are made from high-Tc oxides are cooled by liquid nitrogen.
