Microstructural and physical properties of layered manganites oxides related to the magnetoresistive perovskites

A structural and magnetoresistance study of layered manganites with nominal formula Ln(2-y)A(1+y)Mn(2)O(7) (Ln=Nd, Pr) (A=Ca, Sr, Ba) is presented. A combination of electron diffraction and high resolution microscopy allows us to propose a structural model where two perovskite blacks are intergrown with one rock salt type layer. The average structure crystallizes in a tetragonal unit cell with lattice parameters a approximate to b approximate to a(p) c approximate to 19.3 Angstrom. Moreover, an orthorhombic distortion of the tetragonal cell with lattice parameters a approximate to b approximate to root 2a(p) and c approximate to 19.3 Angstrom has been evidenced for the calcium-based oxides, Different variants of the fundamental structure and intergrowth with the pseudocubic perovskite structure as well as stacking deviations are easily formed. The magnetoresistance effect is discussed in relation to the crystallographic data. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.
