Clan and superclan: Loyalty identity and community in law and practice

In an era marked both by global and regional governance and by rabid neotribalism, individual self-definition has become complicated. Loyalties once focused on the state may now be distributed among Various referents, from the institutions of civil society to religions and affinity groups. Thus, a major life-task of the modern person is to achieve deliberate self-definition to the extent permitted by law. By examining Western laws pertaining to multiple citizenship, the author argues that, for the first time, this voluntary self-definition is supported by enlightened legal systems.
