Grain boundary character distribution in oxides formed on (100) and (111) nickel single crystals coated with ceria gel

A numerical analysis of texture data was conducted to assess the grain boundary character distribution in oxides formed at 1073 K on the (100) and (111) crystal faces of nickel coated with ceria gel. As input data were used the orientation distribution functions of oxide grains derived from three basic pole figures, measured by the X-ray technique. As an output of the calculations, the grain boundary misorientation functions and frequencies of coincidence site lattice boundaries were obtained. The results revealed that the substrate crystallographic orientation exerted an essential influence on oxide grain boundary structure. The presence of ceria introduced some changes; however, they are rather small and cannot explain the existing differences in oxide growth kinetics. An implication of this finding for the explanation of the 'reactive element effect' is discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
