The Office of Research oil Women's Health (ORWH) was established within the National Institutes of Health in 1990, in response to the acknowledged need for women to participate directly in medical research. The earliest undertaking was the development of a research agenda to identify and address gaps in our understanding of women's health and to actively recruit women and minorities into clinical studies. As part of its educational outreach efforts, the ORWH coordinates health seminars to share the latest research on health topics of current concern to women. During 1998, the Women's Health Seminar Series, "Women's Health Research for the 21st Century," included the Women's Health Initiative with the focus on hormone replacement therapy and chronic pain conditions, among other topics. With this issue, the Journal of Women's Health continues publication of the presentation summaries. The second of the series, "Chronic Pain Conditions in Women," follows.
