This article provides a general overview for community health care personnel by describing how preparedness at the local level is essential for protecting patients and health care personnel and promoting quality health care. The primary focus is on laboratory preparedness and the role of the clinical microbiology laboratory in the overall institutional preparedness plan. The most likely agents to be used in a bioterrorist event are described, as are the associated clinical syndromes. The appropriate responses for the community hospital laboratory also are detailed.
