Expert systems are rapidly growing in diversity of application and usage worldwide. Even though expert system development has been slow in application to the specific field of welding, expert system technology has been pervasive in other areas of engineering and manufacturing. This paper provides an introduction to expert systems, their development and their applications to welding.
