Toward Perfection: Kapellasite, Cu3Zn(OH)6Cl2, a New Model S=1/2 Kagome Antiferromagnet

A study was conducted to demonstrate the synthesis and preliminary magnetic characterization of Kapellasite mineral, which is a metastable polymorph of Herbertsmithite that shares its chemical formula, Cu3Zn(OH) 6Cl2. Kapellasite mineral was synthesized, using a modified method to that used by Feitknecht from ZnCl2 solution and copper metal. The perturbative effect in Kapellasite was expected to be smaller, due to the quasi-2D nature of its structure, while Cu/Zn disorder in Herbertsmithite introduced local exchange between the kagome planes. Powder neutron diffraction (PND), taken with the D1a digffractometer at the ILL from a 0.3 g sample of protonated Kapellasite showed that a single copper hydroxychloride phase was formed under the prevailing synthetic conditions.
