Skeletal myoblast transplantation is associated with intramyocardial differentiation into myotubes, stable engraftment, and improvement of postinfarction left ventricular function. Initial clinical results are encouraging and warrant further assessment by Phase II trials. Enhancement of cell survival, optimization of cell delivery, and face-to-face comparisons with bone marrow stem cells are among the major areas of investigation.
