Danger of poisoning by stainless steel anodes used for the electrophoretic deposition of phosphors - Composition of screens as monitored by laser Raman spectroscopy

YNbO4:Bi phosphor screens deposited by the electrophoretic deposition method have been examined using laser Raman spectroscopy. Evidence was found that screens, which manifested poor performance under cathodoluminescence testing, were contaminated with Fe3+ ions. The presence of Fe3+ ions could only have originated in the stainless steel anode. This work demonstrates the danger of using anodes capable of poisoning the phosphor.
