The gaint transverse magnetoresistance in a magnetorheological suspension with a conducting carrier

In this article there has been described a method of production and investigation of the transverse magnetorheological suspension with a conducting carrier. The suspension consisted of ferromagnetic particles obtained from steel with 4% of silicon steel content. The sizes of the ferromagnetic particles were in the range 0.15-0.20 mm. These particles were dispersed in a carrier of a non-polymerised epoxy resin and graphite particles not exceeding 0.5 mu m in size. Six samples of such suspensions with a different content of silicon steel and graphite particles were produced. These samples were placed in a magnetic field of 0-1.1 T and their transverse magnetoresistance measured. In 1.1 T it was found that the relative changes of resistivity of the samples was in the range 61-97.9%. When the field was switched off, it was observed that the hysteresis of resistivity reached values ranging from 26.5 to 73.7%. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
