摘要：

A classification scheme developed to aid in understanding the usages of various components in the network and the kinds of economic and performance tradeoffs that are involved is presented. Examples of the OXCs, DWDM, and M-DWDM are used to illustrate how the scheme can be extended in more detail and to actual applications.
