Methods for the determination of Mode I fracture toughness are numerous. Among these methods, the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) recommend Chevron Notched Short Rod (SR) and Chevron Notch Round Bar in Bending (CB) as the standard procedures. Despite this standardization, the use of the test for rock characterization and indexing purposes is not widespread. In view of this, a method for the rapid estimation of mode I fracture toughness using the point load apparatus is introduced.
