Detection of loose bodies in joints

Intra-articular loose bodies are chondral, osseous, or osteochondral fragments that originate from the internal surfaces of synovial joints (synovial membrane and cartilage covered surface). Loose-body formation is more commonly related with joint trauma, osteonecrosis, osteoarthritis, locking of the involved joint, pain, effusion, and limitation of motion. Early identification and surgical removal of loose bodies is essential to preventing secondary osteoarthritis, which develops as a consequence of chronic internal derangement of the joint. Ultrasound effectively detects intraarticular loose bodies in a variety of joints and can be used as a screening tool.
