High density recording on perpendicular recording media using inductive heads was studied. A MIG head with a small gap length of 0.15 mu m could write on a Co-Cr medium of 100 nm thickness with the same write performance as that of a head with a larger gap length. A high D-50, of over 200 kFRPI with the S/N of 30 dB was obtained for a track width of 3 mu m, indicating a high areal density recording of 1.5 Gbit/in(2). The density limit would be increased much higher using an improved Co-Cr-Nb medium with a high resolution AMR head, Improvement in O/W was obtained by introducing a thin soft magnetic backlayer. A small time decay in the output and the low noise property of the double layer media were also confirmed.
