Effects of a phase shift on two-photon process

The dynamics of an excited two-level atom in the presence of other (N - 1) de-excited atoms (all obeying two-photon transitions) inside a high-Q cavity is presented. An analytical expression including the effects of an instantaneous phase shift experienced by the Nth atom, has been developed. Our results show that by selecting the phase judiciously, the two-photon emission probability can be enhanced. Particularly in the two-atom case, a photon pair is released with absolute certainty. In the other cases, the photon pairs are partially trapped as the probability of emission decreases with the rate 1/N. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
