This paper deals with the structural improvement and electrochemical characteristics of bipolar Ni/MH batteries for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). An improvement is applied in bipolar battery design, and the capacity ratio of a single cell in a bipolar battery is optimized. Electrochemical testing results show the improved bipolar battery has excellent high rate discharge capability and fast recharge ability, and satisfactory charging efficiency at different states of charge. Moreover, the improved battery also displays good stability under pulse cycles at simulating working conditions of HEVs, which verifies the possibility of being used as a power storage device on hybrid vehicles.
