Electron confinement in nickel and copper nanostructures on Cu(111)

摘要
Room-temperature deposition of Ni on Cu(111) in the submonolayer range induces the growth of monolayer and bilayer islands. Bilayer nanoscale islands with either Ni or Cu surface layer are found to coexist, the electronic properties of which have been probed by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. For both systems, a dispersive surface state is identified by local tunneling spectroscopy, and quantum interferences patterns due to the finite lateral size of the islands are observed by differential conductance mapping. Electron confinement on Cu-terminated islands is analyzed with a simple model to estimate the effective mass and the band edge of the associated surface state.
