This paper describes iron loss measurements in a permanent magnet servo-motor, which has a stator constructed with soft magnetic composites (SMC). It is shown that whilst the SMC has significantly greater iron loss density than silicon iron steel, it has many other advantages. The SMC machine is shown to outperform its conventional laminated equivalent.
