Evaluation of the Stoeckli method for the estimation of micropore size distributions of activated charcoal cloths

The Stoeckli method for the estimation of micropore size distribution (PSD) is analyzed and quantitative relationships between the mean and width of the PSD and the parameters a and m of the Stoeckli equation, as well as a qualitative relationship between the DA exponent, n, and the PSD mean and width, are presented. The method is applied to nitrogen adsorption data obtained on a series of activated charcoal cloths and quite reasonable and internally consistent semiquantitative micropore size distributions are obtained. Criteria which should be used to assess the reliability of the results obtained when the Stoeckli method is applied to experimental data are suggested. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.
