Fine-structure analysis of Gd M45 near-edge EELS on the valence state of Gd@C82 microcrystals

Transmission electron energy-loss spectroscopy has been performed on a crystalline Gd@C-82 endohedral metallofullerene. Measurements of the chemical shift and the branching ratio of the Cd M-45 near-edge fine structure have revealed unambiguously the trivalent Gd atom (S-8(7/2)) encapsulated in the carbon cage. The results indicate that the encaged Gd atom is subject to a strong electronic field of the carbon cage.
