It may be useful to review some of the basic considerations that should determine control strategies because failure to distinguish between hypothesis testing and estimation has frequently caused problems in statistics. In the same way it is necessary to clearly distinguish between the detection of signals in process noise by process monitoring and the estimation of the level of the current disturbance needed for compensation by feedback control. A comparison between statistical process control and engineering process control has been presented regarding when and where they could be useful in monitoring quality in the process.
