Enhanced toughness due to stable crack tip damage zones in bulk metallic glass

摘要
Extraordinarily high values of fracture toughness of a Zr-Ti-Ni-Cu-Be bulk metallic glass are measured using a single edge notched tension geometry. These high toughness values are associated with the development of a crack branching zone contained within the plastic zone ahead of the main crack tip. Evidence suggests that these branches originate as shear bands and represent the true size of the plastic zone due to inhomogeneous plastic deformation.
