In December 2005 an investigative team said there was no evidence that Woo Suk Hwang,a Korean scientist and his team had produced any of the patient-specific stem cells that they had stated in their paper. His team had falsified results and duplicated cell lines. The paper was hailed as a seminal breakthrough in stem cell research. Scientists hope such stem cells could someday lead to insights into many hereditary conditions as well as the creation of replacement tissues genetically matched to patients.
