An important sonar signal processing problem is the detection of targets under highly reverberant conditions. To address this issue two wavelet-based approaches have been, developed. Both have been designed to improve the signal-to-reverberation ratio of each sonar channel prior to beamforming. The first method uses the wavelet shrinkage method to denoise the sonar signals. The second method uses a sub-band adaptive filter to estimate the target location in the sonar signals so that reverberation effects can be easily removed. Both detection methods have proven to be very effective even at high reverberation levels.
