摘要：

Tuberbalosis is the most widespread and persistent human infection in the world. There are an estimated 8.5 million new cases annually with an annual death toll of nearly 3 million. Pharmaceutical companies continue to search for effective treatments of tuberculosis, as many strains of the bacteria have developed a resistance to first-line drugs currently used to treat the disease. Historical aspects as well as recent developments of tuberculosis are discussed. (C) 2002 Prous Science. All rights reserved.
