It is often claimed that the national minimum wage has been a major cause of unemployment in France. However, econometric studies using time-series data have been unable to identify any substantial impact. In this paper we analyse what happened to the employment of young persons using sectoral data following the 10% increase in the minimum wage that took place in June 1981, We find that there was a statistically significant, negative effect on youth employment.
