Optical and EPR study of point defects in PbWO4 single crystals

摘要
Annealing procedures in the air and vacuum atmospheres at the temperatures up to 910 degrees C were applied to PbWO4 single crystals to study induced changes in the transmission characteristics. Regardless of the origin and doping of the crystals, annealing in air at the temperatures above 600 degrees C results in enhancement of 420 nn absorption band, while similar treatment in vacuum diminishes this band significantly. The absorption bands at 520 nm and 740 nm are tentatively ascribed to F and F+ centres, respectively. An EPR investigation of rare earth trace impurities in PbWO4 single crystals was carried out at 4.2 <T<300 K. The Nd3+ and Ce3+ ions were identified, being described by an axial spin Hamiltonian with an effective spin S=1/2. The g factors of Nd3+ and Ce3+ as well as the constants of hyperfine interaction of Nd3+ were obtained.
