摘要
his study evaluates the existing literature and presents new findings on the value of mental activity for maintaining cognitive function. Cross-sectional studies show that mental activity is positively associated to a moderate degree with performance on measures of crystallised intelligence in old age. A small association between activity and fluid abilities is also evident. Longitudinal studies show that individuals who have more social and cognitive resources early in life are more likely to maintain an active and engaged lifestyle in old age. Although most of the relationship between mental activity and cognition can be explained by education, a causal relationship between mental activity and crystallised intelligence is plausible.
