The luminescence of Eu2+ in Sr-3(PO4)(2):Eu2+, Ba-3(PO4)(2):Eu2+, Ba2Mg(B3O6)(2):Eu2+, and Ba2Ca(B3O6)(2):Eu2+ has been studied. In these structures there are rows of three (large) cations. Emission is observed from Eu2+ on the central and the terminal sites in these rows, the longer wavelength emission originating from Eu2+ on the central site. This assignment is confirmed by measuring the intensity ratios of the emission bands. It fits a model proposed earlier. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
