Valence and magnetic ordering in the Yb5SixGe4-x pseudobinary system

摘要
Yb5SixGe4-x has been studied using Yb-170 Mossbauer spectroscopy. Ytterbium is present as both Yb2+ and Yb3+ in essentially equal amounts. The Yb3+ moments order below similar to 1.7 K for all x, and extrapolation of the hyperfine field to zero temperature yields Yb3+ moments of 2.1 +/- 0.2 mu(B). Despite the composition independent structure and valence balance in Yb5SixGe4-x, we find that the Yb3+ ordering is quite complex for x=1,2,3 and that there is a marked jump in T-N between x=3 and x=3.5.
