The epidemiology of noncardiac chest pain (NCCP) is poorly understood. Studies suggest that NCCP is a common medical problem in the community. Assessment of risk factors of NCCP remains incomplete but includes gastrointestinal, psychological, and dietary factors. The majority of subjects did not seek medical advice regarding their chest pain, but the reason for this is unknown. NCCP sufferers have a poorer quality of life than those experiencing no chest pain. Thus, NCCP is a significant health problem in the community.
