This article summarizes the 1992-1993 characteristics of graduate programs and departments in psychology throughout the United States and Canada and compares these data with those obtained from 1970-1971 and 1979-1980 by Stoup and Benjamin (1982). Data were obtained from the 1994 edition of the Graduate Study in Psychology (American Psychological Association, 1994) and were based on 458 institutions, 559 separate departments, and 2,023 individual graduate programs. Information is presented for both entire departments (e.g., faculty characteristics, student profiles, admission criteria, application fees, GRE and grade point averages, tuition costs, and financial assistance) and individual graduate programs (e.g., admission prerequisites, application deadlines, number of applicants, and enrollment statistics). The discussion centers around robust differences between master's-only and doctoral departments in psychology and pivotal trends in graduate education over the past three decades.
