Selectivity control of products in consecutive hydrogenation of diphenylacetylene with chemisorbed hydrogen

Selective hydrogenation of diphenylacetylene to cis-stilbene plus traces of trans-stilbene and to bibenzyl with atomic hydrogen, i.e. chemisorbed hydrogen, was carried out using a two-compartment cell separated by a palladized Pd sheet. The product selectivity was influenced by the electrolytic current for the production of chemisorbed hydrogen and the concentration of diphenylacetylene. A lower current and higher concentration led to cis- and trans-stilbenes, while a higher current and lower concentration led to bibenzyl forms. This can be qualitatively explained on the basis of the number of supplied chemisorbed hydrogens or diphenylacetylene molecules per hydrogenation site on the palladized Pd sheet.
