Self-assembly of carbon nanohelices: Characteristics and field electron emission properties

We report the synthesis of self-assembled carbon nanohelices on iron needles using microwave plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition. The catalytic growth can be explained by the vapor-liquid-solid theory. Their morphologies and microstructures are investigated by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, nanobeam diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. The field-emission investigations show a rather low turn-on electrical field and high emission current. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.
