The article attempts a critical evaluation of the "Uberlieferungsgeschichtliche Methode," which has been an important methodological basis for studies in literary history and editions in the field of medieval German philology for the past 30 years. Such an evaluation necessarily includes a confrontation with the tenets of the "New Philology."
