The application of biomimetic principles in polymer and material science is a rather modern approach to generate novel systems with superior and/or unexpected properties. This paper aims to elaborate some historical context as well as general principles of the biomimetic approach. © 2010 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH and Co. KGaA.
