Atopic dermatitis is the most common chronic skin condition in the pediatric age group. It is characterized by dry, sensitive skin; eczematous patches; pruritus; lichenification; and a predisposition to staphylococcal cutaneous infections. Most affected individuals have a personal or family history of atopy. Physicians should be aware of the multiple therapeutic options available, because they often can help patients achieve relief from itching and improve the overall condition of their skin. Associated findings, such as ichthyosis vulgaris and keratosis pilaris, need to be identified to provide accurate patient education and management.
