Interaction of oxygen with lead-precovered nickel(100)

摘要
The interaction of oxygen with lead-precovered Ni(100) has been investigated by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). The oxygen chemisorption capacity decays linearly with lead coverage and is completely suppressed above 0.5 lead atom per nickel atom; lead acts as an inert site blocker for the chemisorption stage. Preadsorbed lead slows down the oxidation kinetics, but does nor prevent substrate oxidation; nickel oxidation occurs in the bare areas as well as under the lead deposit. For lead, the oxidation mechanism is different according to whether the atoms are in a two-dimensional configuration (submonolayer range) or in a three-dimensional one (crystallites): for crystallites, oxidation occurs from direct impingement of oxygen molecules; for a submonolayer deposit, the oxidation results from a charge transfer between the lead atoms and the underlying nickel oxide.
