New limits on 2β+ decay processes in 106Cd

An experiment to study the double positron decay of Cd-106 (beta(+)beta(+), beta(+)/EC or EC/EC) has been performed at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of INFN. A low background setup with two large NaI(TI) crystals and cadmium samples (total mass similar or equal to 154 g), enriched in Cd-106 at 68%, have been used. New limits on the half-lives for the different beta(+)beta(+), beta(+)/EC and EC/EC decay channels in Cd-106 have been obtained. They are in the range (0.3-4) 10(20) y at 90% C.L., which is significantly higher (by a factor 6 to 60) than those already published for this nuclide. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
