摘要：

The primary care providers' first challenge in office assessment of dementia is in identifying individuals who may have cognitive impairment. Several tools are available for screening and, when applied as part of the routine with other health maintenance measures, can uncover declining cognition before it is debilitating and jeopardizes patient and public safety. Simple initial assessment can be undertaken to simplify and expedite the consultant evaluation. Early detection and intervention facilitates realization of greater benefit from pharmacologic, behavioral, and social interventions.
