Nucleation and growth of drop-like clusters in two-dimensional colloidal systems

摘要
The aggregation of two-dimensional colloidal polystyrene microspheres induced by an external alternating electric field was studied by in situ microscopy. Direct observations of cluster creation and evolution revealed that the system aggregates by a nucleation-limited mechanism. The kinetics under different experimental conditions are investigated. In this nucleation-limited aggregation, the cluster growth can be expressed in time by a power law with an exponent of 1/3.
