Recent measurements of rise times of plumes from suddenly initiated steady fires versus observation height have been expressed as a constant dimensionless rise lime. Rise times deduced from the literature for t-squared, power-law lire growth have also been expressed as a constant dimensionless rise time, and the behavior for the two fire types related. Available theories for suddenly initiated steady fires underestimate rise times. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
