Sentinel lymph node mapping and biopsy represent a paradigm shift in the standard treatment of the breast cancer patent. Currently, there are three cooperative, international clinical trials underway to address the important question of whether a standard full axillary node dissection is necessary in patients with breast cancer who have had a sentinel lymph node removed. The National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project Protocol B-32 and the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group Protocols Z0010 and Z0011 are described in this article.
