Formation and stability of small particles of potassium studied by real-time surface differential reflectance

摘要
The growth of K particles on SjO(2) is investigated by real-time surface differential reflectance spectroscopy. The K clusters give rise to a strong optical absorption at 1.6-1.8 eV in the spectra, due to the excitation of a dipolar Mie plasma resonance in the clusters. The difference of this resonance energy with those observed at 1.9-2.12 eV for small free K clusters by photoabsorption experiments is interpreted by the electrostatic interaction between the clusters and the substrate. The stability of the K clusters on the substrate is also studied by following the decrease of the resonance absorption as a function of time. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
