NMR measurements related to clay-dispersion quality and organic-modifier stability in nylon-6/clay nanocomposites

A study on the characterization of the nylon-6/clay nanocomposites using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements was performed. Clay-dispersion quality and organic-modifier (OM) stability were considered as the two main issues for characterization of nanocomposites. The potential relationship between measured longitudinal relaxation values and the quality of the clay dispersion was suggested. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the poorer the clay dispersion, the greater was the average distance between polymer/clay interfaces and the weaker was the average paramagnetic contribution to longitudinal relaxation.
