A rapid compression machine (RCM) was developed to simulate a single cycle of an internal combustion engine to allow the study of spontaneous ignition under more favorable conditions than those existing in real engines. Focus was given to the chemical processes that precede ignition and result in an induction or ignition delay time. The machine was able to compress and to heat mixtures of fuel and oxidizer to conditions near those in a knocking engine.
